"In 1998, Thom Yorke was on JJJ (national radio station in Australia)
doing a "High 5": he had to program his 5 favourite songs. These included:

Prince Buster: Madness,
Doctor Octagon: Blue Flowers,
Tom Waits: Jesus Gonna Be Here Soon,
NEU!: Hallogallo,
Tindersticks: Don't Look Down,
Charles Mingus: Freedom

quite a musical awakening for someone whose most adventurous interests were
Tool and Radiohead... I can still remember hearing this crazy, doomed old guy
singing like the world's about to cave in. I rushed out and bought "Early Years
Vol II", which wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done. I love it now, but it
wasn't at all what I was looking for at the time. Persevered, though, and now
I'm a bona fide fanatic. :)

"well, I've been a Pogues fan for many years and after reading an interview
with Shane MacGowan where he stated that Tom Waits had a major influence on
him, I decided to give it a go.
so here I am... being completely fascinated with this Waits guy, who's
probably the best thing that happend to songwriting since George Gershwin
along with the equally brilliant and talented Nick Cave, Leo Cohen and the
semi-mythical Dylan"

" (...) In late-eighties a friend was working at the University of Waterloo student
radio station (another Canadian) and I used to hang out with him while he
was on the air (late night shift on a weekday.) I can't remember the reason
but, the station manager give me a used copy of Swordfishtrombone. I took
it home and listened to the album and I wasn't sure what I was listening to.
It sounded odd, like nothing I had heard before. I wasn't sure if I like it
or not but, I would keep listening to the album. I would put another album
on my turntable and the next album would always be Swordfishtrombone. I
needed more. The next album I purchased was Rain Dogs and I was hooked..

I do know a few other people who enjoy Tom but, they tend to like his older
stuff, I tend to like his newer material.

Thanks for the great string.

Bob"
